OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
Last updated 30 September 2026.
OCD is not about being tidy. It is a cycle of unwanted, upsetting thoughts (obsessions) and things you feel you must do to ease the anxiety they bring (compulsions).
Most people know it doesn't quite make sense, which makes it harder to talk about. It responds well to treatment.
What it can look like
- Checking locks, the gas or switches over and over
- Washing your hands until they're sore
- Unwanted thoughts that upset you and won't leave
- Needing things done in an exact way or order
- Seeking reassurance again and again
- Losing hours of the day to it
When it’s worth coming in
- It takes up more than an hour a day
- It causes you real distress
- It is affecting work, study or family
How I can help
We map out the thoughts and rituals, what triggers them, and how they affect your day.
The most effective approach is a structured form of talking treatment called exposure and response prevention: facing the fear in small, planned steps without carrying out the ritual. Medication helps many people too, and the two often work best together.

Questions
Will the thoughts go away completely?
For many people they become much less frequent and far less upsetting, so they no longer run the day. That is the realistic aim of treatment.
